Other local attractions include:
Elche, known as the 'City of Palms' with its historic centre and fabulous shopping centre is just 15 KM away and is definitely well worth a visit. Its centrepiece is a wonderful park known as El Palmeral, which along with its fascinating array of palm trees, also houses a great children's playground to keep the young ones happy. The rich local heritage of shoe manufacturing allows the visitor to take in a tour of a shoe factory such as El Salvador should that be of interest to them, or if not, why not just explore some of the hundreds of culinary outlets that the city has on offer by way of a cool beer and some tasty tapas. Various festivals take place throughout the year, please check the local tourism office for details of events.
El Hondo Nature Reserve sits in between Elche and San Fulgencio (12 KM) and forms part of what is known as the lagoon area. This was naturally created by the mouth of the River Vinalopó and became almost entirely drained around the time of the 13th Century due to over zealous farming practices. Various walkways and observatories have been recently constructed which allow the visitor to watch the many different species of birds attracted to the reserve, while at dusk, some spectacular sunsets can be witnessed behind the distant mountains. It truly is a most beautiful and peaceful refuge to spend a little time away from it all.
